Godly Relationships: Dating & Marriage

Here's a chance to share what you've learned & gained during our rather extensive seminars on Dating & Marriage this past Sunday.

Since we had separate seminars for men & women, let's be appropriately sensitive in our comments. But feel free to share not only your comments & reflections, but also your questions, and to respond to others' posts.

Here's an important truth to think about:
If you attempt to build intimacy with another person before you've done the hard work of becoming a whole and healthy person, every relationship will be an attempt to complete the wholeness that you lack and end in disaster.
(Parrott, L. & L., Relationships, p.20, emphasis mine)

my thoughts on the seminar..
hmm i cant imagine being celibate like paul..that would be tough...
but marriage has its own challenges..

well anyway it's not my choice since both are a gift from God.

when it comes down to it life really is too short--my relationship God must be my focus.

um... just to give a quick clarification, marriage is absolutely YOUR choice.

No one is FORCED to marry or to remain single.

But more on that on our next seminar on Singleness.

You know, I wish I had this seminar earlier in my life. I wonder if it would’ve changed some of the stupid things I got myself into before… I’m almost certain it would’ve! But as Aslan says, “To know what would have happened, child? No. Nobody is ever told that… But anyone can find out what will happen.” Hehe

Anyway, it’s not easy to change so radically after having lived life thus far thinking “it’s ok” (ie: what I’m wearing, what I’m saying, what I’m doing, who I’m meeting etc).

But, I can attest to the truth that once we start being honest with ourselves and with God, deal with our issues, and allow God to heal us of our sullied past; our lives WILL start changing naturally by the supernatural working of the Holy Spirit.

I am walking, talking evidence of this grace :)

I know some of the topics discussed in the seminar were hard and seemingly impossible- or even legalistic. But, we really DO have to make that much more effort to be pure and faultless before God--- not because of some legalistic attempt to satisfy Him, but because we’re head-over-heels in LOVE with HIM and want to express that in everything we do.

& I completely agree with David when he said, “My relationship God must be my focus.”

A wise woman once told me that the "wonderful thing about [relationships] is that as you walk with God, if there is someone God is pleased to see you walking alongside, it will not only feel right, but not become a distraction in your walk with God. So long as God is in the center, there is always room for the one He chooses for your life."

Mmmm~~~ without a doubt! ^^*

It's hard sometimes to steer my attention away from relationships when I'm surrounded by a society where people are encouraging dating for all of the wrong reasons. The constant push and pull of the world is sometimes so overwhelming, but even then I find refuge in the hope that can only come from God. The world and its opinions of what I should do with my life seem farther and farther away as I every day struggle to grow closer to the heart of a God that knows my thoughts, needs and anxieties, and whose faithful promises remain true even in the face of turmoil. I don't want marriage, then to be something that the world underhandedly suggests that I should do for whatever reason, but something that I choose to do through God's standard.

Oh, that God would continuously give me the heart to stay committed to this!
